What to Do in Tenerife on a Rainy or Cloudy Day
Updated 29 October 2026 · DoTenerife
On a rainy day in Tenerife, the first thing to try is simply driving to the other side of the island: when the north is grey, the south is often sunny, and vice versa. If it’s wet everywhere, head for Santa Cruz’s museums and the Auditorio, La Laguna’s science museum, Loro Parque’s indoor penguin and aquarium zones, a shopping centre, or the Cueva del Viento lava tube. Evenings are easy: bars and dinner shows carry on regardless of the weather.
Why the weather varies so much
Tenerife’s mountains split the island. Trade winds push cloud against the north coast, so Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna and Anaga can be grey while Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are bright. Rain in the south is infrequent and usually comes in short spells, mainly between November and March. Mount Teide can have snow in winter while the coast is warm.
Tip: check a live webcam or weather app for the south-west before cancelling your plans.
Indoor attractions
Museums in Santa Cruz and La Laguna
- Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología (MUNA), Santa Cruz – Guanche mummies, archaeology and natural history of the Canaries.
- TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Santa Cruz – contemporary art in a striking building with a café and library.
- Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos, La Laguna – hands-on science museum, good for kids.
- Museo de Historia y Antropología, La Laguna – housed in a historic mansion in the old town.
Check opening days before you go, as many museums close one day a week (often Monday), and some have free-entry times.
Loro Parque
Several of the best areas are indoors or covered: Planet Penguin, the aquarium and shark tunnel, and the covered show stadiums. See our Loro Parque guide.
Pirámides de Güímar
The ethnographic park has an indoor museum about the pyramids and Thor Heyerdahl’s theories, alongside the outdoor gardens.
Cueva del Viento, Icod de los Vinos
One of the longest volcanic lava tubes in the world. Guided tours must be booked in advance and require closed shoes.
Auditorio de Tenerife
The landmark concert hall on the Santa Cruz waterfront hosts classical concerts, opera and touring shows; guided tours are sometimes offered.
Shopping centres
- Siam Mall (Costa Adeje) – shops, restaurants and a big supermarket opposite Siam Park.
- Shopping centres in Santa Cruz and La Laguna – the north-east has the island’s largest malls, with cinemas.
- Smaller resort centres in Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos have bars, cafés and some indoor entertainment.
Active indoor options
- Bowling, arcades and cinemas – several shopping centres include them; most films are dubbed into Spanish, so look for “V.O.” (original version) screenings.
- Escape rooms – a handful operate in the south and in Santa Cruz.
- Spa day – many four- and five-star hotels in Costa Adeje sell spa passes to non-guests.
Food and drink
- Long lunch: a rainy day is a good excuse for a slow menú del día or a guachinche lunch in the north.
- Wine tasting: Casa del Vino in El Sauzal has a wine museum, tastings and views when the cloud clears.
- Markets: La Recova (Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África) in Santa Cruz is a covered market open most mornings. See Tenerife markets.
With kids on a wet day
Loro Parque’s indoor zones, La Laguna’s science museum, bowling and cinemas are the safest bets. Siam Park’s water is heated, so light drizzle needn’t stop you if rides are open. More ideas in Tenerife with kids.
Evening entertainment
Rain doesn’t stop the nightlife. Live music bars, tribute shows, comedy nights and dinner shows run indoors as usual. Check what’s on tonight for shows near you.
Which months are wettest?
Most of Tenerife’s rain falls between November and March, and the north and the mountains get much more than the south. In the southern resorts, a “rainy day” often means a few showers and a cloudy morning rather than a washout. Summer is almost always dry. See Tenerife weather by month for details.
Safety in heavy rain
- Stay out of ravines (barrancos), which can flood suddenly.
- Avoid mountain roads to Teide, Masca and Anaga during warnings; rockfalls are common.
- Trails, including Masca, may close. Check official sites.
- Follow AEMET and Canary Islands government alerts. In an emergency, call 112.
Frequently asked questions
Does it rain much in Tenerife?
Not in the south. The southern resorts get very little rain, mostly in short spells between November and March. The north is wetter and cloudier, especially in winter.
What is there to do in Tenerife when it rains?
Museums in Santa Cruz and La Laguna, the Planet Penguin and aquarium at Loro Parque, shopping centres such as Siam Mall, the Pirámides de Güímar museum, the Cueva del Viento lava tube and an evening show are all good wet-weather options.
Is Siam Park open when it rains?
Siam Park generally stays open in light rain and the water is heated, but heavy weather or strong wind can close some rides. Check the park's website or social media on the day.
If it's cloudy in the north, will it be sunny in the south?
Often, yes. Trade winds push cloud against the north side of the island, so the south and south-west are frequently sunny when Puerto de la Cruz is grey. The reverse can occasionally happen.
What should I do if there is a weather warning in Tenerife?
Follow guidance from the Canary Islands government and AEMET, the Spanish weather agency. Stay away from ravines (barrancos), exposed coasts and mountain roads, and check whether attractions and trails are closed.
